The small steps do make a difference
I stayed up the eve of the USA elections – Having gone through the Al Gore and Bush election drama 8 years ago I have always been interested in the USA election process. I bought Obama’s book ‘Dreams From My Father‘ early this year after I saw how my best friend Mark was so taken with the Obama campaign. In trying to support Mark I got sold to Obama, as prior to that I was for Hillary mainly cause I never believed Obama would make it. I read the first quarter of the book, and admit it was a good read but I then put it aside for a while. I picked it up again on the day he won and wow, was I amazed by it. Reading Obama’s book again helped me to understand who he was, how he did it , and what he had done that made the difference.
As I read his book, I understood, I saw myself in his shoes, in how he made it. What was so striking was that it was the small steps he took everyday that finally made the difference, the questions he had, the search for answers and getting more questions instead of answers. I realized that it was not the absence of fear, because even though he was never sure for a whole day he never gave up, wanting to make a difference to all he came across, even in small doses. He made a difference. Today when we look we see this huge impact he has made in the world but his book taught me that small steps no matter how insignificant they might appear today, will always amount to something. There are times when there was no one who agreed with him but the nag in himself, and that was enough to push him.
How many times do we doubt ourselves because of what the surroundings are pronouncing? Thank you Mr President you didn’t give up.
